A story from a new path

Hopper Packs for Adventure

Hopper packing food, water, and cord for an adventure with Shadow and Luna

Hopper landed on an old stump with an acorn in each paw. His reddish-brown tail whipped behind him like a banner in a storm. "High rocks! New view! Maybe a hidden hollow," he cried. "We leave now!"

Shadow looked up from the path. "Now sounds good."

Luna glanced at the open cloth on the stump. A water flask, a coil of cord, and three wrapped food packets waited beside it. "After we pack what we need."

Hopper dropped his acorns into one packet and slapped both paws on the cloth. "I will pack. Fast job. Then we go!"

Luna touched each item as she named it. "Four things: food, water, cord, and a tight knot."

Hopper's eyes widened with the fierce look he wore whenever the world became a puzzle. Four things would take no time at all. He placed the food packets in the center of the cloth and shouted, "One!"

A bright pebble flashed beside the stump. Hopper froze, then dropped to all fours and hurried toward it. "Shiny. Very shiny. Possibly treasure."

Shadow followed and nudged the pebble with one paw. "Is it useful?"

"Maybe. It could mark a lost tunnel or point to a buried crown. It could also be a pebble." Hopper turned the smooth silver-gray stone over in his paws. He had already begun studying the marks on one side when Luna called from the stump.

Luna stayed beside the open cloth with one paw resting near the flask. "How many things are packed?"

Hopper looked back at the open cloth. "One. Food first. Treasure second." He carried the pebble to the stump anyway and set it beside the packets. Then he added the water flask and announced, "Two!"

He reached for the cord, but a branch dipped above him and framed a narrow line between the trees. Beyond it, afternoon light shone on a rocky slope. Hopper's paw stopped in the air. He smelled stone and pine, and somewhere ahead he heard the faint rush of water.

"There! New path. Rocks. View. Come on!" Hopper bounded under the branch. Shadow raced after him, but Luna stayed beside the loose supplies.

Luna held up the loose cord so he could see it from the rise. "Hopper, what did you promise to finish?" she called.

He stopped on the first rise. The path tugged at every whisker, yet behind him the cloth still lay open. "The packing," he said.

Shadow looked from Hopper to Luna, then back at the path they had not yet taken. "We keep starting, but we never leave."

Hopper's tail slowed. Shadow had followed him to the pebble and the path. Luna had waited beside the same unfinished bundle both times. "I made everyone start twice."

"The path will still be here," Luna said, keeping her paw beside the cord. "What is the next thing?"

Hopper raced back to the stump, but this time he stood still long enough to name the whole task. Food. Water. Cord. Knot. He pulled the cord into the bundle and counted three.

The pebble gleamed beside his paw. Hopper nudged it away from the cloth. "Not supplies," he told it.

He drew the cloth corners together, but the flask rolled sideways. Hopper stopped and set it between the food packets before wrapping the cord around the bundle twice. His first knot slipped. The rushing sound beyond the branch seemed louder, and his eyes flicked toward the path.

Then he looked down at the loose cord. "One job," he whispered. He pulled the loops apart and tied them again, moving more slowly this time. When he tugged each end, the knot held firm.

"Four!" Hopper shouted. His tail burst into motion as he lifted the bundle and pushed the silver pebble into his cheek. "Packed! Ready! New path!"

Shadow grinned and stepped beneath the branch. "Now sounds good."

They climbed toward the rocky slope with Hopper in the lead. He still hurried, but he looked back at every turn. When Luna paused to study a mark in the bark, he waited. When Shadow stopped at a steep root, Hopper showed him a safer step.

At the top, the hidden hollow was only a shallow dip between two stones. Hopper loved it anyway. The trees opened just enough to show the first evening star, and he untied the bundle before passing each friend the packet meant for them. His own held the acorns he had brought.

Hopper held the silver pebble in one paw and an acorn in the other. "Best treasure?" he asked.

Shadow tapped the knot that had carried their supplies all the way up the slope. "The one we remembered to bring."

Luna looked from the secure bundle to Hopper, then across the new view. "And the friend who brought it."

Hopper tucked the silver pebble beside him. There would always be another thing to chase. For now, he shared the food and watched the star appear with his friends.
